Module Description: In this module students will discuss the role of the project manager. The PMBOK principles will be discussed and students will plan, schedule and allocate resources to a project using project management software.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Discuss the nine areas of project management defined in the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) and describe how these apply to managing projects.
LO2 Plan a project by developing a project scope, schedule and resource allocations using appropriate computer software.
LO3 Evaluate the financial viability of projects using standard accounting techniques.
LO4 Track and control a project using Earned Value Management techniques.
LO5 Describe the role and responsibilities of the project manager.

Project Management Book of Knowledge
Project life cycle phases: project management knowledge areas. Project management process groups. Initiation process. Planning process. Execution process. Controlling process. Closing processes. Project life cycle.
Project Planning
Project scheduling. Work breakdown structure. Time estimating. Network diagrams: Activity-on-Arrow & Activity-on-Node diagrams. Forward and backward scheduling. Multiple dependencies. Gantt charts. Network analysis and critical path identification. Probability scheduling.
Resource Management
Resource allocation. Resource levelling. Project reduction techniques. Crashing.
Project Tracking & Control
Earned Value Management - schedule performance index, cost performance index. Project completion issues.
Engineering Economics
Economic decision making, strategic planning, understanding financial statements. Interest and the Time Value of money. Principles of investment. Investment appraisal using Present Worth, Equivalent Annuity and Rate of Return techniques. Payback period and Discounted Cash Flow Replacement and Capital Investment decisions. Evaluating alternatives.
