Module Description: This module is designed to introduce students to the Montessori Learning Materials for use with children ages 9-12 years. Students will develop proficiency in the use and presentation of the learning materials in the following areas: Language, Mathematics, Geometry and Algebra, History, Geography, Science (Culture Subjects) and Creative Arts.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Discuss the rationale for the materials associated with each curriculum area 9 - 12 years.
LO3 Demonstrate each exercise and place it in the continuum of exercises within the specific curricular area.
LO4 Design a variety of learning experiences linking appropriate learning to practice with the inclusion of lesson plans.
LO5 Reflect on the Knowledge, skills and competencies developed through the study of each curricular area 9 - 12 years.

Indicative Content
Discuss each curricular area and align with the strands and sub strands of the Primary School Curriculum 9 - 12 years.
Review how children develop concepts in each curricular area. Chart children’s progress from using concrete materials to the acquisition of abstract concepts. Promote cross curricular integration of subjects.
Discuss the rationale for the materials associated with each curriculum area.
Know the purpose of the exercise and how the knowledge gained can be applied in practice. Link exercises to the strands and sub strands of the Primary School Curriculum.
Demonstrate each exercise and place it in the continuum of exercises within the specific curricular area.
Learn to demonstrate all Montessori exercises under each curricular area. Knowledge of inherent sequence of exercises.
Expound on the learning outcomes for the child 9 - 12 years.
State the learning outcomes for each area of the curriculum. Outline teaching strategies and assessment techniques. Devise relevant assessment modes to quantify knowledge, skills and competence of learners.
Critically reflect on the skills developed through the study of each curricular area 9 - 12 years.
Communication, analytical, problem solving, reasoning and research skills relevant to each curricular area. Competence and confidence in each subject area is required.
