Module Description: The penultimate in a progressive series of skill oriented modules, dealing with symmetrical scales (whole tone and both forms of diminished scale). Melodies shall be harmonized using chords from both the major and minor scales, with implied modulations. Aural skills development will focus on the recognition by ear of common occurring slash chords. A transcription of a complex rhythm section passage shall be undertaken by the student, notating the harmony, rhythmic hits, specific bass and drum parts where appropriate and the melody. Auxiliary instrumental skills will culminate with the student performing on their auxiliary instrument in a live setting with other musicians.

Indicative Content
Harmony
The theory of symmetrical scales- namely both forms of diminished scale and the whole tone scale. An exploration of the harmonic considerations that such scales (and construction) implies. Harmonizing melodies using chords from both major and minor scales.
Aural skills
The identification by ear of slash chords commonly found in popular music. A transcription of a complex passage for rhythm section
Auxiliary instrumental studies
The demonstration of acquired advanced auxiliary instrumental skills in a live/band setting
Aural skills continuous assessment
Students will be marked on attendance and preparedness for each weekly lab; additionally weekly skills evaluations conducted on a computer using the app EarMaster will be utilized.
