This module explores the use and control of artificial lighting within a studio setting with reference to historical and contemporary practices. Through workshop sessions students learn how to use and control studio lighting.

Indicative Content |
Pre-production
Designing and planning for photographic images. Starting points, themes, issues and/or subject matter. Planning a shoot - generating an effective project plan and resourcing the project. The constructed image.

Studio and Lighting Techniques.
Use and control of artificial light - ambient light, external flash, strobe units, continuous lighting sources, light modifiers, combined light sources, light metering. Health and safety matters.
Lighting and its effects - light angle and direction, contrast, reflection, color temperature, diffusion and concentration.

Post-Production
Image editing and processing. Use photo editing software. Selecting and presenting images as series. Portfolio preparation and presentation. Alternative presentations - ePortfolios,
