This module examines the historical milestones in the evolution of photography as a visual medium. Photography is considered within the more general context of art and design history.

Indicative Content |
Historical Contexts
Precursors to photography - camera obscura, camera lucida, heliograph. Key stages in the history of photography from its invention and early use through to more contemporary practice. Photographic genres. The history of the moving image. Photography and video and their relationship with fine art and design within a historical context. Social, political, technical and philosophical contexts. Censorship and propaganda.

Examining and Discussing Photography and Video History
Applying critical theory to photography. Critical and analytical, era-appropriate appraisal of photographic and video images. Generating and applying era-appropriate criteria to still and moving image analysis. Writing about photography and video history, essay writing, sourcing information, referencing, structuring.
