Module Description: This module develops managerial skills in the practical application of business law and
human resources in relation to the Early Childhood Education & Care (ECEC) sector. Dimensions of current managerial issues within the sector are identified and solutions examined. The models of business organisation current within the sector are evaluated.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Assess fundamental concepts, roles and responsibilities of management in the context of the ECEC sector
LO2 Evaluate various planning, organisational and motivational techniques appropriate to the management of projects/group and team activities.
LO3 Analyse and develop Human Resource strategies to meet the changing needs in today's competitive workplace
LO4 Evaluate the varying legal forms of business organisation salient in the ECEC sector.
LO5 Appraise key concepts of contract, agency, consumer and insurance law operating in the ECEC sector.

Indicative Content
Management Techniques
Function of management in an ECEC setting - what are the roles, responsibilities and skills required. Fundamentals of management concepts and techniques. The nature of measuring, reporting, assessing performance and quality control.
Business & Organisational Skills
Planning & organisational goals. Setting objectives. Planning and decision making. Organisation and staffing: factors that influence organisational structure, authority and responsibility.
HR Management
Human Resources strategy formulation. Evaluating the HR function in an ECEC setting. Developing a Recruitment, Selection, Training and Development programme to meet ECEC needs. Workplace diversity and multi-disciplinary team work.
An Introduction to Business Law
Contract law - formation (offer, acceptance, consideration, intention to form legal relations). Terms of contract - express and implied term - employment contracts, consumer protection and Sale of Goods and Supply of Services legislation. Discharge of contract. Remedies. Aspects of commercial law: Insurance law, Agency.
Company Law
Modes of doing business in Ireland and the legal requirements of establishment and accountability; reporting; directors' duties; regulation and enforcement.
