Module Description: This module requires students to explore visual culture as a field of enquiry that allows us to examine images and explore how we interpret and comment on our existence through visual means. Students research key concepts and theories influencing contemporary art and design practice with particular emphasis on photography and video. This research culminates in the production of a dissertation or a professional research report.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 analyse still and moving images using criteria informed by cultural, historical, technological and social contexts.
LO3 evaluate relationships between theory and practice within their own image making practices and work.
LO4 complete independent research involving photographic and video image making and practices.
LO5 formulate and present arguments and research findings orally, visually and in written form.

Visual Culture as a Field of Enquiry
The dimensions of visual culture. Dominant concepts, philosophies, methodologies and debates that inform visual culture as a field of enquiry. Visual culture and visuality historical contexts.. Exploration of vision, visuality, virtuality, materiality, representation, culture, technology and agency. The relationships between art history, visual culture, and aesthetics. Criticism and reviewing.
Case Studies
Analysis and discussion of selected still and moving images including student work
The Research
Formulating a research topic derived from the student's practice and professional interests. Constructing coherent, substantiated arguments. Research methodologies and approaches to the interpretation of visual artefacts and practices. Dissertation and Professional Research Report content and structure. Universal academic research conventions and professional standards of writing and presentation. Research ethics.
