Module Description: This module explores the techniques and approaches involved in making still and moving images of people in both natural and artificial light. The module emphasises the importance of the quality of interaction between the photographer/videographer and the subject(s) to ensure that what is captured is more than just physical characteristics. The module also considers the legal and ethical issues associated with portraying people.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 report on essential critical issues and practices associated with portraying people.
LO2 respond effectively to set briefs through visual research, experimentation and the realisation of intended outcomes.
LO3 select appropriate equipment and material to achieve intended outcomes when portraying people.
LO4 produce a series of visually and conceptually engaging still and/or moving images of people in different situations whilst being cogniscent of associated legal and ethical issues.
LO5 engage in debate on the concepts, issues and practices encountered through individual research and practical outcomes.

Emotion and the human condition. Character and expression. Interacting with the subjects. Composition, perspective, form, texture and pattern. Light, tone, colour and contrast. Screens and reflectors. Positioning and associations. The decisive moment. The figure within different photographic genres.
The Portrait
Formal and informal portraits. The figure in different locations, in available light and in artificial light. Composing the portrait. Self-portraits
Groups
Organisation and logistics. Managing and directing the group. Group dynamic and group cohesion. Creating connections. Expressions in the group.
Contexts
Action and events photography. Informal street photography - street photography and documentary photography. The figure in motion. Legal and ethical issues associated with photographing people.
