Module Description: |
This module explores the creative and expressive uses and control of available light in photography and video with reference to historical and contemporary practices. It also introduces the student to core skills, practices and technical knowledge with distinct emphasis on available light. Through workshop sessions students learn how to apply these skills and technical knowledge and to best exploit the qualities of available light.

Indicative Content |
The Camera
Digital and analogue camera controls. Lenses, types and uses. Focus control and depth of field. Aperture and exposure and their creative contexts and potential.

Available Light
Noticing and seeing available light. Light qualities i.e. light direction, intensity, tone, contrast, diffusion and how these affect how things appear. Time of day and colour temperature. Monochrome and colour tone. How to see, control and capture available light (historical and contemporary contexts).

Image Capture in Available Light
Creative and expressive possibilities of light. Use of available light – positioning the camera. Light and composition. Representing form, depth and surface qualities. Creating mood and tone. Learning to see and use light as other than functional. Use of light meters, reflectors, diffusors to control tone.
