Module Description: This module supports the development of a critical understanding of the rights of the child in 21st century Ireland and how this understanding is translated into practice in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings. Students will deconstruct concepts such as the child’s voice, agency and participatory practice.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Verbalise a critical understanding of children's rights in society with particular focus on early childhood education and care.
LO2 Critically examine the relevant early childhood education and care policy developments in 21st century Ireland and explore their impact on the child’s voice.
LO3 Debate critically the often competing rights of adults and children in relation to early childhood education and care in both national and international contexts.
LO4 Create an early childhood curriculum that has children’s rights, agency and participatory practice at its core and adheres to the regulations and practice frameworks in Ireland.
LO5 Develop policies and procedures that support children’s rights in early childhood education and care settings.

Theoretical understanding of children's rights
Concepts: voice of the child, agency, participatory practice, empowerment, the infant and young child as citizens, the child in the family, community and wider society; Historical overview of children's rights in Ireland and internationally; Theorists: Hart (Children's Rights, Ladder of Participation), Clark & Moss (Mosaic Approach), Rinaldi (Reggio Emilia), Nutbrown
Children's rights in practice
Developing curriculum, policies, procedures, etc. that support the incorporation of children's rights into early childhood education and care practice and adhere to the national practice frameworks, guidelines and regulations; the role of the early childhood practitioner in supporting children's rights, agency and participatory practice
Advocating for, and with, children
Exploration of the concepts, principles and practices of advocacy in relation to the young child; methods of meaningful consultation with the young child; national and international policies on respecting children's rights
