Module Description: This module is designed to introduce students to the educational materials, designed according to the principles of Dr. Montessori, used to teach children aged 6-9 years. Students will develop proficiency in the use of the educational materials used to teach content objectives, from the Primary School Curriculum, in relation to Language, Mathematics, History, Geography, Science and The Arts.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Discuss each curricular area and align with the strands and strand units of the Primary School Curriculum: Infants to 2nd class.
LO2 Discuss the rationale for the materials associated with each curriculum area (infants to 2nd class).
LO3 Demonstrate each exercise and place it in the continuum of exercises within the specific curricular area.
LO4 Apply knowledge to practice, to include lesson planning and making materials that match content objectives of the Primary School Curriculum.
LO5 Critically reflect on the knowledge(s), skills and competencies developed through the study of each curricular area (infants to 2nd class).

Indicative Content
The Montessori approach to education in a primary school classroom.
Review how children develop concepts in each curricular area. Chart children’s progress from using concrete materials to the acquisition of abstract concepts. Promote cross curricular integration of subjects. Design schemes of work and lesson plans. State the learning outcomes for each area of the curriculum. Outline teaching strategies and assessment techniques. Devise relevant assessment modes to quantify knowledge, skills and competence of learners. Develop material to meet the content objectives of the Primary School Curriulum
Using Montessori materials.
Know the purpose of the exercise and how the knowledge gained can be applied in practice. Link exercises to the strands and strand units of the Primary School Curriculum. Learn to demonstrate all Montessori exercises under each curricular area. Knowledge of inherent sequence of exercises.
Skills development
Communication, analytical, problem solving, reasoning and research skills relevant to each curricular area; making material in line with Montessori principles; lesson planning; developing schemes of work; conflict resolution; positive behaviour management; documenting learning.
