Module Description: This module addresses the principles and practices of environmental and energy management systems. Students will be introduced to the techniques involved in carrying out environmental and energy audits.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the generic requirements of environmental and energy management systems such as those defined by ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.
LO2 Identify, using audit tools, the environmental impact of the activities, products or services of an organisation.
LO3 Identify opportunities with the potential to improve the environmental performance of an organisation and produce an environmental management programme to implement selected opportunities through defined objectives and targets.
LO4 Introduce basic auditing techniques required to determine conformance with the requirements of environmental and energy management systems standards.

Indicative Content
The Regulatory Landscape
National and international policies and regulations. ISO 14001 and ISO 14004 standards for environmental management. The EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Standard.
Environmental Management Systems
Understanding sustainability. The role of environmental management. The life-cycle of products and processes. Analysis of use of utilities. Carbon footprints. Carbon footprint analysis. Green teams. Human factors. Interpersonal skills required for negotiation and maximising buy-in from clients.
The Audit Process
Context setting: personnel training; corporate responsibility. Planning: the role of green teams; scale and scope. Review of corporate policy. Identification of environmental impacts of products, processes or services. Set up test and verification procedures. Undertake audit using statistical sampling techniques. Evaluate findings. Reporting: options; recommendations and action plans. Implementation of action plans. Verification and feedback. Review of process.
Case Studies
Case studies will be carried out individually; topics may include resource efficiency in business sectors, analysis of the use of utilities, environmental and energy improvement programmes, and the carbon footprint of organisations.
