On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Delineate the historical context of the principal musical genres and cultural movements
LO3 Explain the evolution of Irish Traditional dance and vocal music
LO4 Analyse and elucidate the musical structures of Irish Traditional Music
LO5 Place both Western Art Music and Irish Traditional Music in a contemporary cultural context

Musical Style
The genesis and evolution of the principal musical forms; the rise of the orchestra; the piano; dissemination
Music and Ideology
Nationalism expressed in the music of the 19th and 20th centuries; aesthetics; serialism and other trends
The Irish Tradition
The history of Traditional Irish Music; the principal instruments of the Tradition; solo and ensemble playing; sean-nós singing
Dance Music and Airs
The principal genres and forms of traditional instrumental music; regional styles of performance; contemporary trends
Cultural Context
The place of music in society; the living tradition; performance practice; crossing the boundaries
