Module Description: The purpose of this module is to introduce Biological Science students to basic concepts in computational biology, and develop numerical/IT biology-specific skills appropriate to modern concepts in selected industries.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Recognise the importance of computational biology and discuss examples of its practical applications in the biological sciences
LO2 Design spreadsheets and implement formula to solve calculations necessary for biological sciences
LO3 Evaluate and describe biological problems using data analytics, and determine statistical significance
LO4 Define the concept of bioinformatics and discuss its applications in the selected industries
LO5 Develop professional reports and presentations using modern IT tools

Document creation, formatting, tables of contents, using integrated referencing software, working with long documents, generating reports
Presentation Software
Slideshow creation, animations, transitions, image editing, presentation skills
Spreadsheets
Spreadsheet organisation and linking, use of formulas, inputting data into figures, creating different types of figures
Computational Biology
Everyday applications of computation and calculations within the biological sciences, practical and computational examples within microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, nutrition and food science, and general biology
Biostatistics
Use of computational methods to investigate categorical and continuous data, probability distributions, estimation of parameters and statistical significance
Bioinformatics
Introduction to basic concepts in bioinformatics and practical applications in the selected biological industries
