On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the historical development of the airline industry, the changing regulatory environment, issues in the industry and the emerging trends/developments within the industry.
LO2 Outline the structure and determinants of airline costs, and cost in relation to the cruise line sector
LO3 Critique the factors that have contributed to the growth of the airline and cruising industry
LO4 Examine the significance of cruise tourism to destinations in terms of economic,environmental, cultural and social impacts.

Indicative Content
Trends in the Airline Industry.
An introduction to the airline industry. The role of IATA and ICAO. Identify the key characteristics of schedule, charter and low cost airlines. The consequences of liberalisation, open markets and open skies on the airline sector. The impact of airline alliances and codeshare on airline operations. The future of airline distribution.
Airline Costs
The structure of airline costs to include direct/indirect operating costs and non operating costs. Determinents of airline costs such as prevailing wage level, price of aviation fuel, aircraft type and characteristics, the influence of demand, marketing/financial policies and management qualties.
Cruise Industry.
An introduction to the evolution of cruise tourism which has lead to the present day growth of the industry. Worldwide cruise demand, customer segmentation and marketing. Suppliers of cruise tourism and destinations visited. Cruise products.
Impacts of Cruise Tourism.
Identify the magnitude of the economic contribution on local economies from cruise activities. Environmental policies and challenges facing the cruise industry. Tourism and local experiences in cruise tourism destinations. A case study of The Economic contribution of the Cruise Sector to the Island of Ireland.
