Module Description: This module enables the student establish their knowledge of the disciplines of Community Music and Music Therapy through a mixture of supervised practical experience and academic study.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Discuss the context within which Community Arts Practitioners and Music Therapists operate.
LO3 Analyse, through research and supervised participation, a variety of projects run by experienced musicians working within a range of settings.

LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of a range of Music Therapy approaches as applied to a variety of client groups.
LO6 Engage in musical improvisation and interaction with an awareness of therapeutic potential.

Indicative Content
Community Music
Workshop techniques / Activities: Learn a variety of techniques and approaches to enable musical engagement with a range of group-types. Background to Community Arts: Overview of the evolution of "community arts" in modern culture. Observation/Participation: Off-site supervised observation and participation in music making in a non-formal setting
Music Therapy
Knowledge and Context: Introduction to (i) the scope of the Music Therapy profession, (ii) a range of Music Therapy approaches and pioneers and (iii) an overview of how their work has been applied in a variety of contexts. Practical Skill Development: Practical exploration of some of the uses of improvisation in Music Therapy. Observation/Participation: Off-site supervised observation and participation in music making in a non-formal setting.
Definition of areas
Clarification of the differences and overlaps between Community Music and Music Therapy.
