Module Description: This module will introduce the learner to specialised topics of importance to the biotechnology industry, specifically relating to discovery, types and engineering of bio-molecules.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the potential impact on cells of protein misfolding using specific examples.
LO2 Describe the role of high throughput screening in the drug discovery process.
LO3 Provide an overview of genetic engineering strategies used to generate biopharmaceutical expression systems.
LO4 Provide an overview of different biopharmaceutical therapies.
LO5 Decsribe the role of engineering in generating proteins with altered properties.
LO6 Perform experimental tasks related to drug discovery and development .

Protein Folding
Role of the protein quality control system - ubiquitin proteasome system and chaperones. Protein misfolding and disease.
Drug Discovery and Development Process
High throughput screening in drug discovery. Lead compounds. Pre-clinical and clinical trials. Drug approval processes.
Sources of Biopharmaceutical Proteins
Engineering of microbial and mammalian expression systems.
Biopharmaceutical Therapies
Monoclonal antibodies and other proteins. Vaccines. DNA based therapies.
Protein Engineering
An examination of the benefits of protein engineering using insulin as an example.
Laboratory Programme
Conduct relevant laboratory procedures and practical skills.
