Module Description: The first in a series of modules looking at the practical considerations of songwriting. The constituent elements of songwriting such as harmony, lyrics, form are discussed, with reference to specific songwriters/songs. Weekly submissions based on these elements facilitate the student's active engagement with the songwriting process. The practicalities and considerations of a live original music performance are discussed, such as advertising and promotion, venue considerations. The module culminates in a performance by the student of original material.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO5 Present in a live context a short concert of original songs

Indicative Content
Songwriting elements
An exploration of songwriting elements such as form, instrumentation, rhythmic concepts, harmony, lyrics and rhyming schemes. Additionally, specific songwriters and their use of the above elements is examined
Performance
A performance of original material
Continuous assessment
Each individual student in monitored on a weekly basis. The continuous assessment mark is comprised of attendance and participation in the lab, as well as the quality of weekly submissions required by the module
Advertising and promotion
The considerations of concert advertising, such as posters/ flyers etc
