Module Description: This module explores the concept of financial management, in particular the investment decision, with a focus on its application in IT/IS organisations.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 apply the theories of investment analysis to compute and compare beneficial investments for an organisation.
LO3 apply complex and specialised skills and tools to perform effective investment decision making.
LO4 analyse and communicate effectively the motives, methods and rules for mergers, take-overs and management buy-outs

Interpretation of Financial Statements
Examination of the main financial statements. Review of the main accounting policy notes. Ratio analysis.
Capital Investment Analysis
Capital budgeting, evaluating investment proposals, Capital rationing.Capital replacement decisions.
Risk Management
Portfolio risk and diversification. Portfolio theory and Capital asset pricing model (CAPM). Hedging against interest rate fluctuations. Expectations and effects of inflation.
Growth Decisions
Mergers and Acquisitions, management buy-outs. Valuations of publicly quoted firms and private companies.
Business Failure
Reasons for business failure. Fraud : causes and symptoms.
