Module Description: The student is guided through the initial research, bibliography and early draft of an extended academic B.A. (hons) thesis of 12,000 to 15,000 words.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Document a fully-researched and complete bibliography for the proposed thesis.
LO3 Demonstrate ability to structure an argument in a logical and coherent way
LO4 Prepare a first draft of the extended thesis, fully referenced and accompanied by bibliography.

Indicative Content
Research
Identifying useful and relevant primary and secondary sources. One to one guidance in understanding the historiography of the chosen subject area.
Synthesis
Ability to synthesise all primary and secondary material used, placing it firmly in a historiographical context
Ideas, analysis, and argument
The student is guided in the development and refinement of the thesis argument. Skills of analysis and the ability to situate the thesis argument in a clear critical context are developed through discussion of the first draft as basis for the final submission. Originality of argument is tested and interrogated in tutorials.
Methodology
Conducting primary research, including interviews with practitioners. Conducting secondary research and literature review. Individual guidance on how to identify a sustainable and focused argument. How best to structure the argument, distinguishing different strands and working them into a format based on the CCAD thesis guidelines.
Full first draft of extended thesis
The writing of a full thesis draft which is clear, focused, coherent and well structured. Drawing conclusions which show a clear and critical point of view and demonstrate originality of thought.
