Module Description: A programme which guides the student through the identification of a topic, the literature review, the proposal, the drafting and the final presentation of a thesis on creative practice.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Select and develop a suitable topic for a fine/applied art thesis
LO2 Conduct a literature review to identify sources and establish current state of critical debate
LO3 Write a thesis proposal, with a clear argument and a coherent critical position, accompanied by a draft bibliography.
LO4 Structure the thesis in accordance with thesis guidelines, to best reflect the argument.
LO5 Write a first draft, fully referenced and accompanied by a full draft of the bibliography.
LO6 Submit a finished thesis, fully referenced and illustrated and in accordance with the Crawford College of Art & Design Guidelines

Indicative Content
Introduction
Thesis guidelines. Selection of an appropriate topic.
Research
Identifying useful and relevant primary and secondary sources. One to one guidance in understanding the historiography of the chosen subject area.
Methodologies
Conducting research and literature review. Individual guidance on how to identify a sustainable and focused argument. How best to structure the argument, distinguishing different strands and working them into a format based on the CCAD thesis referencing sttyle guidelines.
Writing
The production of a well developed thesis outline and bibliography. The writing of a clear draft, properly structured and referenced, accompanied by bibliography
Synthesis
The use of both written and visual sources as evidence, and a successful synthesis of all secondary material
Ideas, analysis, and argument
The student is guided in the development and refinement of the thesis argument. Skills of analysis and the ability to situate the thesis argument in a clear critical context are developed through discussion of the first draft as basis for the final sbmission.
Final written outcome, and conclusions
The writing of a final thesis draft which is clear, focused, coherent and well structured. Drawing conclusions which show a clear and critical point of view. Presentation of final written thesis of 6,000 to 9,000 words, fully referenced and illustrated, in accordance with the CCAD thesis guidelines.
