Module Description: This is the second in a progressive series of specialised instrumental performance modules. Individual students submit a proposal to specialise in specific areas of progressive performance practice. Students will demonstrate self-awareness and efficient independent learning. Advancing instrumental technique, stylistic authenticity, musical expression and instrumental fluency are expanded in the context of public performance. Individual tutorials address the specialised developmental needs of the individual learner.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Propose, prepare, promote and present a musically-engaging 30 minute public performance of varied popular repertory – demonstrating leadership, management and performance flair.
LO2 Demonstrate competence and fluency in the technical patterns and mechanics required to internalise core control of the chosen instrument.
LO3 Create, present and expressively perform a precise transcription of assigned challenging repertory.
LO4 Integrate technical ability with appropriate musical choices to perform an unprepared piece at sight in time with a click/ backing track.
LO5 Demonstrate mature self-awareness in order to solicit advice and organize relevant feedback into an effective and efficient practice regime.

Indicative Content
Advancing Technical Internalisation:
Intense focus is placed on advanced technical ability and the internalisation of core technical considerations. This intensive technical study, when placed in the context of in-depth stylistic knowledge, will facilitate the progressive development of musical expression, fluency and flair in performance.
Technical Breakdown:
This module contains study of advanced technical etude repertory, application of instrument-specific rudiments, scales and arpeggios, advanced sight-reading, detailed transcription, challenging critical analysis and transposing at sight - up/down a major third – where appropriate to the chosen instrument.
Self-Awareness and Learning to Learn:
An understanding of the learner’s specific developmental needs is formed through discussion and self-assessment over time. Realistic professional objectives are set. Students implement and manage an effective practice regime to successfully attain personal objectives. Further progression toward autonomous learning ability is developed through self-assessment and lecturer consultation. The student's active participation in this process is essential and is continuously monitored and encouraged by the instrumental lecturer.
Specialist Awareness:
Progressive critical analysis of leading performers/composers/artists from the student's chosen area(s) of specialisation - through recommended and self-directed reading, listening and transcription.
Planning & Leadership:
Application of previous experience and hindsight allows for deeper engagement with planning, managing and leading the presentation of a public performance.
Continuous Assessment:
The student is monitored on a weekly basis. Considerations such as attendance/ punctuality, participation/ leadership, preparedness and specialised programme development/ technical development are all taken into account in the context of the progressive requirements of the module.
