Module Code: DESI6029
Title: Design - Information Graphics
Long Title: Design - Information Graphics
NFQ Level: Fundamental
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2017/18 ( September 2017 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 2140 - Design Studies
Module Delivered in: 1 programme(s)
Module Description: This module introduces students to the fundamentals of designing information graphics, concentrating on the communicative values, both functionally & aesthetically of information design. Students will focus primarily on developing visual language skills in the visualisation of various design/communication systems, for example, symbols, signs, icons and other information/graphical representation.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Research existing information graphic systems & processes.
LO2 Apply the fundamental principles relating to information design to a given project.
LO3 Visually investigate the aesthetic & functional qualities of information graphics.
LO4 Design final information graphics with key emphasis on the communication objectives set out.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Indicative Content
Semiotics & Meaning
Semiotics, decoding message-receiver & the use of visual metaphors as a theoretical foundation of information design will be explored.
Research & analysis
Research & analyse existing communication and information systems & case studies.
Design Process
Undertake a thorough design process to turn complex information/ideas/objects/data into visual communication or visual representation that is easy to understand.
Visual Language & Graphic Anatomy
Determine through visual exploration a visual language in the navigation of exploring information graphics. The application, understanding & appreciation of the detailed graphical anatomy of successful information design will be developed & applied through a given brief.
Final Project
All research, ideas, investigation & outcomes will be handed up for assessment. Outcomes will be presented with a clear narrative that helps to clearly explain & showcase the visual journey.
