Module Description: |
This module concentrates on making presentations, writing summaries, and on using communication research tools. It aims to increase students' confidence in presenting information and ideas to a live audience, developing their ability to use technology as an aid to, rather than as a substitute for, human communication. The module intends to sharpen the students' proficiency in summarising information, ideas and arguments in a variety of media and formats as well as providing a practical introduction to some communication tools used to gather information for projects.

Indicative Content |
Presentation Aids
Using technology as an aid to, rather than a substitute for, effective communication; adapting information for oral and visual delivery; cue-card preparation and correct usage; preparation and use of acetates and powerpoint slides; demonstration; display/exhibit; drama/role-play; use of sound; adding dramatic effect.

Summary and Synopsis
Writing summaries and synopses; producing concise agendas and minutes; reducing scripts to key points on cue-cards; summary of arguments; visual synopsis; powerpoint summaries/reductions; producing short reports, executive summaries and abstracts and progress reports.

Reasoning and Argumentation
Reasoning and communication; propositions and motions; types of reasoning (induction/deduction); validity and soundness; argument types; fallacies in reasoning; dealing with counter-arguments; persuasion techniques.

Oral Presentation
Topics include making a connection with a live audience, establishing and maintaining eye-contact, developing voice projection, cultivating a natural tone, controlling non-verbal communication, managing time, opening and closing presentations, rehearsing, dealing with Q/A sessions.

Communicating and Researching
Survey methods: observation/recording;vox pop; questionnaire; focus group; intervention/experiment; structured/unstructured interview; poll.
