Module Description: This module provides a foundation in basic musicianship skills, developing vocal and keyboard skills as communicative tools, building notational fluency, and developing aural and written analytical skills.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Sight-read vocal and rhythmic pieces in one and two parts
LO2 Identify and reproduce features of a given musical passage.
LO3 Analyse simple pieces of music into their constituent elements.
LO4 Manipulate basic musical structures in written form, and in vocal and keyboard improvisation.
LO5 Demonstrate keyboard facility appropriate to his/her profile
LO6 Demonstrate a knowledge and application of the rudiments of music

This module is part of a restricted access course. Students should have passed the BMus Degree entrance test or equivalent.
 
Indicative Content
Aural skills
An introduction to tonic solfa as a sight-singing tool; elementary sight-singing in one and two parts in major and minor keys and in pentatony; improvisation on pentatonic and basic tonal melodic patterns, memorisation, aural analysis and notation of folk melodies and short canons.
Notation and Terminology
An introduction to scales, keys, key relationships, clefs, modes, chord structures and music terminology.
Keyboard skills
This programme develops a variety of keyboard skills - including sight-reading, harmonisation of melodies, transposition and improvisation to a level appropriate to each student's profile
Analysis
An introduction to principles of form as exemplified in eighteenth-century small-scale pieces.
