Module Description: Photography is a core component within the graphic design Industry. Understanding how it is used within the design environment forms the basis of this module.
The photographers studio is often the first point of contact for most designers in terms of working with professional photographers. Therefore understanding how and why things happen within this environment is very important. Also the differences in workflow and approach that differentiate studio based photography with that of location type photography.
An overview of the photo studio, its equipment and practice are also introduced to the student.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Select appropriate studio equipment within a defined environment while incorporating ‘Good Practice’.
LO2 Operate specified lighting equipment for the purposes of image capture
LO3 Create a selection of images to a defined brief within a studio environment
LO4 Select the appropriate workflow strategy for correcting digital images for the publishing environment.
LO5 Prepare a Shooting plan for use in briefing a Photographer.

Indicative Content
The Photography studio
An introduction to the Photo studio and its equipment. Good practice including issues of health & safety are viewed within the context of this environment. Standard lighting setups for packaging and copy work are also introduced.
Location Photography
An overview of techniques and workflows relating to Photographing on Location.
The role of the visual
The purpose and use of designer generated visuals for Photographers. Standard criteria. How to avoid confusion through pre planning.
Digital Processing
Strategies for digitally processing images for the publishing environment.
