Module Description: This module is designed to develop project planning, management and implementation skills on a number of levels. In particular, students will learn how to develop innovative thinking, and employ project management skills including statistical principles related to biological research.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Apply the scientific principle using a hypothesis type approach, and develop management based skills relevant to biological projects including reporting and presentation of data
LO2 Apply creative and innovative thinking to scientific problems
LO3 Perform statistical analysis on a range of scientific experimental data
LO4 Use library and web based resources to access and compile scientific information related to a specific subject matter

Indicative Content
Scientific Principle and hypothesis based research
An explanation of the scientific principle and examples of its application in evidence based research
Creative and Innovative thinking
An exploration of the creative thinking process and the application of innovative ideas in science
Statistics
An explanation of the principles of statistics and a detailed overview of their application in a scientific context
Reporting and data gathering
An overview of the resources available to compile and organize scientific data in a logical manner
Scientific publishing
An explanation of the "peer review" process and the importance of scientific metrics such as impact factors, h indices etc. Students will also learn how to prepare a scientific publication and differentiate between the different types of scientific literature

Assessment Description
An assessment of the student's ability to retrieve, record and present scientific data, to perform statistical calculations and to evaluate experimental data

Assessment Description
Team based project which will allow the student to research a specific area and apply for "virtual research funding" in an area of relevance to biological sciences. Example could include a new product, a new method, a new assay etc.

Reassessment of this module will consist of a repeat examination. It is possible that there will also be a requirement to be reassessed in a coursework element.
