On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Describe the actions of a selection of natural products on the human body and the indications for their medicinal/ healthcare use
LO3 Debate issues in relation to the safe and effective use of natural products as medicines/ herbal medicinal products/ foods/ healthcare products
LO4 Classify a selection of herbs in terms of their botanical features, organoleptic properties and chemical constituents
LO5 Describe traditional approaches and understanding to the use of natural products singly and in combination

Principles of using natural products as medicines/ healthcare products and the practice of Western Herbal Medicine, using natural products singly and in combination,
Natural Products
Traditional and modern use of natural products (herb, seaweed, mineral, animal, fungi, fish, crustacean, honey and pollen based products)in relation to Medical (disease processes and pathophysiology), Cosmetic and Healthcare issues
Materia medica
Monographs - ESCOP/ Community, formulations - standardised/ galenic, actions, indictations, side effects/ adverse effects/ contra-indications, traditional approaches, pharmacological and clinical evidence
Examination/ identification of herbs
Identification of herbs in terms of their botanical features, principles of and systematic examination of herbs in terms of organoleptic properties, chemical constituents; types of adulteration, inferiority, spoilage, admixture, sophistication and substitution
