This module aims to provide theoretical knowledge and practical competencies in sports performance analysis. It examines theoretical frameworks and techniques which enable the sport scientist, coach and/or athlete to assess sport related performance.

Perform analysis of technical and movement skills based on key performance indicators and relevant literature. |

Indicative Content |
Overview of Sports Performance Analysis
Analysis of literature relating to performance analysis in sport and its impact on coaching practice. Particular emphasis will be placed on: (i) historical development, (ii) theoretical frameworks, (iii) methodological approaches and best practice (iv) issues relating to reliability and validity and (v) key findings in sports performance analysis. The International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport is recommended.

Objective Movement Analysis
Use of objective techniques e.g. GPS, accelerometers in sport. How can objective measurement of training load assist the coaching process. Analysis of scientific literature examining objective assessment of training load. Data analysis process - initialising devices, data collection, downloading data, analysis of data, feedback of analyses.

Subjective monitoring of training load
Subjective internal training load and importance in coaching context. How to apply subjective monitoring e.g. RPE in coaching context. Review literature on monitoring of internal training load.

Subjective wellness monitoring
Subjective monitoring of player wellness using applications such as Metrifit, Potential use of these tools in a coaching context to monitor player wellness, adapt training load and to prevent injury.

Video Analysis
Use of video analysis software, e.g. dartfish to analyse sports performance. Students will engage with the video analysis process by videoing performance, uploading of video of game to analysis package, creation of tagging panel, tagging key elements of the game, creation of storyboard of selected clips, presenting effective feedback of the findings from the video analysis.

Technical Skill Analysis
Video analysis of an elite athlete performing a skill. Coding development based on key phases and key performance indicators (KPI) associated with the skill. Develop an understanding based on the mechanical reasons each key element is performed in this manner.
Video analysis of a non elite athletes skill execution. Application of video notational analysis to identify skill deficits, provide effective feedback and corrective practices to improve technical competence.

Movement Skill Analysis
Video analysis to identify phases and key performance indicators associated with elite sports performers movement mechanics. Application of this best practice model to analyse non elite athletes movement using video analysis software. Development of corrective feedback and appropriate exercises to improve competence of movement.
