Module Description: This course introduces the student to the theory and practice of sports massage therapy with particular reference to injuries of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, chest, neck/back, and associated musculature.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Distinguish between specific injuries to the upper limbs noting important anatomical structures, contraindications and myofascial continuities.
LO2 Identify and demonstrate safe and appropriate examination procedures and soft tissue treatments.
LO3 Select suitable preventative and aftercare interventions for soft tissue dysfunction.
LO4 Evaluate the benefits of sports massage and alternative treatment modalities.
LO5 Conduct a professional consultation with a potential sports massage client.

Indicative Content
Injuries to the upper limb
Injuries of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, chest, neck/back and associated musculature. Contributing factors and suitable treatment: neuromuscular techniques. Case studies. Advanced anatomy.
Assessment procedures
Conduct visual/physical examination of upper limbs noting holistic myofascial continuities. Palpation and comparison of injured and uninjured limbs. Assessment of range of motion, pain and restricted activity. Active, passive and active-resisted tests. Functional testing.
Aftercare and self treatment.
The benefits of corrective exercise, stretching, hydrotherapy, cryotherapy and thermotherapy, hydration and nutrition. Alternative treatment modalities.
Evaluation of client progress
The rehabilitation process. Assessment and evaluation of client recovery and progress over a series of sports massage treatments.
Benefits of sports massage
The role of sports massage in injury prevention, performance enhancement and recovery.

Assessment Description
Treatment of an upper limb injury & Pre-event Massage. Completion of learning log outlining key principles. Note that this assessment element is inextricably related to the delivery; therefore the student is required to attend the practical sessions of this module in order to be re-assessed in this element.
