This module introduces the student to the theory and practice of sports massage therapy with particular reference to injuries of the hip, knee, foot and ankle and associated musculature.

LO1 |
Evaluate and demonstrate a wide range of deep tissue lower-limb sports massage techniques. |
LO2 |
Perform assessment procedures such as visual observation, palpation, range of movement, specific muscle tests, and comparisons between injured and uninjured lower limbs. |
LO3 |
Describe common lower-limb injuries and identify appropriate treatment plans. |
LO4 |
Determine the main contributing factors in sports injuries. |
LO5 |
Select and demonstrate suitable pre-event, inter-event, and post-event massage techniques. |

Indicative Content |
Injuries to lower limb
Injuries to the hip, knee, foot, ankle, and associated musculature. Contributing factors and injury indicators: overtraining, inappropriate warm-up and cool-down, dehydration, age, nutrition and individual factors. After-care advice and rehabilitation.

Assessment procedures
Joint structures and musculature. Visual/physical observation. Palpation of tissue. Range of movement examination. Active, passive and active-resisted examination. Muscle testing.

Sports massage techniques
Deep Tissue, Neuro-Muscular Techniques: Muscle Energy Techniques, Facilitated Stretching, Soft Tissue Release, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point therapy and Strain Counterstrain. Case studies.

Anatomical structures
Position, structure and function. Palpation.
|
Pre and post-event massage
Benefits of pre and post-event massage. Treatment aims and recommended techniques.
