This module introduces the student to the classical strokes of massage with particular reference to the aims of a treatment, holistic massage contraindications and client care. Selected body systems are also studied.

LO1 |
Perform the classical strokes of massage: effleurage, petrissage, frictions, vibrations, and percussion with an awareness of selected contraindications. |
LO2 |
Conduct client consultations with specific attention to matters such as informed consent, appropriate record keeping and aftercare advice. |
LO3 |
Identify and describe anatomical structures and their relationship to massage therapy. |
LO4 |
Demonstrate appropriate salon hygiene practices. |
LO5 |
Explain how to deal with First Aid emergencies in a clinical setting. |

Indicative Content |
Classic holistic massage techniques and contraindications.
Purpose and aims of classic holistic massage techniques. Introduction to the practical technique of each stroke. Benefits and effects of massage. Observation of contraindications. Adjustment of pressure to suit clients needs. When to treat and when not to treat/ refer. Medical permission and informed consent. Total/ local contraindications. Client modesty/ draping technique.

Professional conduct and consultations
Professionalism. How to conduct a consultation with a client. Open and closed questions. Importance of lifestyle and health related issues.

Aftercare & complementary therapies
Recommendations for suitable aftercare. Referral procedures to other practitioners. Alternative therapies.

Anatomical structures
Location, structure, function, and diseases of selected body systems: the skin, lymphatic, reproductive, urinary and muscular/ skeletal systems. Range of movement terminology.

First Aid & salon hygiene
Correct First Aid procedures. How to maintain a hygenic clinic. Common infections and preventative measures. Relevant legislation.
