Module Description: This module is designed to help the student gain proficiency in lifesaving strokes, techniques and staged incidences with a view to attaining Pool Lifeguard accreditation. Emphasis is also placed on improving efficiency in advanced strokes and overall swim fitness.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Execute a variety of lifesaving techniques with composure and efficiency.
LO3 Perform selected land and water based rescue techniques in a variety of challenging settings.
LO4 Analyse staged pool-based emergency situations and react in an appropriate and informed manner.
LO5 Demonstrate an improvement in swimming performance and swim-related fitness.

Indicative Content
Technique
Introduce different techniques, how to improve different elements of strokes. How to identify faults. A learning log outlining the key principles and techniques learned in class.
Practical performance
Demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency in swimming ability in basic and advanced strokes. Improve swim fitness.
Safety operating procedures for pools
Ensuring pool activities are conducted in a safe environment. Being vigilant of all pool users. Ensuring the pool surrounds are free from obstacles and hazards. Working as part of a team to ensure safety for all users. Staging of land and water based emergency situations for students to deal with as appropriate.
Lifesaving
The main lifesaving skills of head up front crawl, side stroke, inverted breast stroke, treading water and towing. Basic life support. Use of main types of rescue equipment e.g. throw ropes, reaching poles and spine board.

Assessment Description
Practical swim exam of the following strokes; head up front crawl, breast stroke, inverted breast stroke, side stroke, treading water and towing under time constraints. Note that this assessment element is inextricably related to the delivery; therefore the student is required to attend the practical sessions of this module in order to be re-assessed in this element.
