Module Description: This module is focused on developing students pedagogical and technical ability in a swimming pool environment. The student will have knowledge of how to assess, correct and improve basic and intermediate level swimmers through practical experiential learning.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Select accurate teaching points and apply appropriate corrections for various swimming strokes and water entry techniques.
LO2 Identify the relationship between creating propulsion and reducing resistance in water.
LO3 Discuss relevant literature relating to stroke development and stroke analysis for improved performance.
LO4 Plan, deliver and evaluate pool sessions and programmes for swimmers of various abilities in a safe and appropriate environment.

Indicative Content
Technical development
Performing swimming strokes to an advanced level. Developing swimming based endurance. Ability to assess a swimmers stroke and give key teaching points and swimming drills to improve. Distinguish between creating propulsion and reducing resistance in water.
Coaching Preparation
Multiple opportunities to plan, organise and evaluate swimming drills with both beginner and intermediate level swimmers. Delivery and management of quality coaching sessions for a group of mixed ability. Compile a learning log outlining key principles learned from these sessions. Using controlled voice projection and clear demonstrations. Providing feedback and correcting exercises to identified faults. Peer feedback and instructor feedback on sessions undertaken.
Learning log
Compiling a list of all teaching points for main strokes. Skill breakdown and stroke analysis identifying key points. Ability to progress a swimmers ability and log changes. Identify the main lifesaving techniques and show competency in introducing the swimmer to these. Describe relevant theory and practice in relation to swim teaching and life saving techniques and strokes.
Safety
Gain an understanding of Safeguarding Children and Child Protection in the pool environment. Ensuring highest levels of safety during the session both in the pool and on the deck. Adhering to the swimming pools guidelines and policy on usage.

Assessment Description

Practical exam of instructional ability, observation and correction of swimmer's technique supported by relevant lesson plans. Note that this assessment element is inextricably related to the delivery; therefore the student is required to attend the practical sessions of this module in order to be re-assessed in this element.
