Module Description: |
This module will develop the student's skill level in the various swimming strokes and help to demonstrate competency in basic lifesaving techniques through practical experiential learning. Students of all swimming abilities, from non-swimmer to advanced are catered for in this module.

LO1 |
Demonstrate proficiency in buoyancy flotation, water resistance, propulsion and sculling techniques. |
LO2 |
Perform the four principal swimming strokes with high levels of technical competence and efficiency. |
LO3 |
Discuss the main teaching points and common faults associated with the basic swimming strokes. |
LO4 |
Apply basic water safety skills. |

Indicative Content |
Water confidence
Buoyancy, flotation, propulsion and sculling techniques in a safe, controlled environment.
|
Swimming ability
Skill development of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and inverted breaststroke including key teaching points and common faults. Identify the health benefits of swimming as a form of exercise and a life skill.

Water Safety
Introduction of basic lifesaving techniques of treading water, side stroke, straddle entry and surface dives through demonstration and practice.
|
Lesson Plans
Identify own areas of weakness and devise lesson plans based on the teaching points for these strokes. Complete a learning log outlining the key principles and techniques for all strokes learned in class.
