Module Description: This module is one of the Exercise Professional suite. It prepares the learner for work as a gym instructor and as a circuit training instructor. The emphasis is on the learner's ability to perform and demonstrate exercises correctly and on developing their skills to instruct.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Demonstrate effective personal technique in a variety of exercises and lifts.
LO2 Apply the correct terminology of resistance and circuit training in relevant gym-based settings.
LO3 Identify the key safety procedures for handling weights, injury prevention and client care when teaching resistance and circuit training and when supervising a weights room.
LO4 Perform safe and effective instruction during the use of cardiovascular training equipment.
LO5 Apply the principles of programme planning to the design of resistance and circuit training programmes.
LO6 Adapt and progress exercises and programmes to meet client needs.

Components of Fitness
Health related and skill/performance related components of fitness.
Principles of Training
Principles of overload, progression, specificity, reversibility, placement, adaptation, individual difference and enjoyment
Free-movement warm-up
Principles of warm-up and cool-down. Phases of free-movement warm up. Instructional skills.
Resistance Training
Local muscular endurance training. Strength training. Safe lifting technique. Safety in the weights room. Types of resistance training. Phases of a resistance training session. Terminology of resistance training. Spotting. Teaching methodology. Observation and correction.
Circuit Training
Circuit design. Bank of exercises. Class management skills. Observation and correction. Client care and injury prevention. Music. Adaptation and progression. Characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of different types of circuit training classes. Session planning
Cardiovascular Training
Correct instruction in the use of cardio equipment in the gym. Choosing the correct programmes, intensities and training durations for clients. Monitoring intensity and achieving training thresholds with clients.

Assessment Description
20 minute peer-teaching assessment to include a warm up, circuit and resistance training element. Compile a learning log outlining key principles and techniques. Note that this assessment element is inextricably related to the delivery; therefore the student is required to attend the practical sessions of this module in order to be re-assessed in this element.
