Module Description: This module develops the learners understanding and application of cinematographic principles and
language to tell stories. By addressing short feature or documentary production for example, the module develops the
learner’s ability to function as a storyteller through the use selective capture and editing of material. Thus communicating ideas and information in a structured and coherent manner
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Select appropriate cinematographic production techniques for different genres
LO2 Create a detailed storyboard and/or script for a video production;
LO3 Use a range of camera and editing techniques to compliment narrative style;
LO4 Record/capture quality footage under a range of different circumstances
LO5 Produce a finished piece of video work.

Storytelling
The basics of storytelling. How stories are structured. The purpose and role of stories in society
Editing & Theory
- Scripting, pre- production, camera techniques; - Montage vs. editing: The shot Montage vs. mis-en-scene Rhythm Continuity vs. “montage of attractions” Picture and sound Emphasis, a synchronism, counterpoint Strategies of montage: perspective, backbone, tone; - Video Post Production; - Non-linear editing.
Storyboarding
The role of the storyboard. Techniques for creating and developing visualisations. The requirements of a storyboards . Their use in production and post production editing.
Practical
The above listed content of the lectures will be accompanied by various hands-on practical assignments designed to convert theoretical knowledge into applied use of cinematographic language.
