Module Description: This module is one of the Coaching Science suite of modules. It focuses on the practical and theoretical aspects of planning, coaching and evaluating effective coaching sessions for adolescents. These sessions are targeted for mixed ability groups.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Discuss and identify effective and appropriate coaching methods for a diverse adolescent athletic population.
LO2 Plan a series of developmentally appropriate sport coaching sessions for adolescents developing the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
LO3 Effectively coach developmentally appropriate activities for the adolescent athlete.
LO4 Critically evaluate peer-led and external coaching sessions for the adolescent athlete.

Indicative Content
Coaching the Adolescent Athlete
Overview of effective teaching/ coaching methods e.g. command, guided discovery, task approach, problem solving. Creation of an athlete centred approach. Holistic development of athlete.
Coaching Process
Planning, implementing and evaluating sports coaching sessions to develop psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains.
Coaching Technical Skills
Ability to effectively teach a variety of skills from selected sports e.g. Volleyball, Badminton. Knowledge of appropriate teaching points, ability to observe faults and provide corrective feedback and practices.
Coaching Tactical Skills
Practical and theoretical knowledge of tactical principles used in a sports such as Volleyball and Badminton. Ability to effectively teach tactical principles to adolescent athletes.

Plan, implement and evaluate practical coaching sessions for adolescent athletes. Note that this assessment element is inextricably related to the delivery; therefore the student is required to attend the practical sessions of this module in order to be re-assessed in this element.
