Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Indicative Content
Introduction to Research
Overview of the research process and steps involved in the process. Qualitative vs Quantitative research. The role of and steps involved in Market Research in the Leisure Industry.
Planning a research project
Formulating effective research questions. Choosing appropriate scales and measurements. Questionnaire design.
Implementing a research project
Choosing an appropriate research design. How to effectively implement measurement procedures in sport, exercise and leisure.
Preparing the data file
Creating a data analysis file using a statistical package (e.g., SPSS) and entering data. Use basic descriptive statistics (both graphical and numerical) to screen and clean the data, along with investigating the presence of outliers and missing data.
Probability Distributions
Random variables. Normal probability distributions (with discussion around other distributions). Use of statistical tables.
Statistical techniques to explore differences
Sampling distributions means. Calculate the required sample size to obtain confidence intervals of required length for a single parameter. Confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for: one-sample mean; difference between two-sample means.
Presentation of Results
How to present the findings from research in a clear coherent manner.
