Module Description: This module is designed to develop and enhance the learners knowledge, competence
and skills to plan, implement and evaluate physical activity programmes for people with disabilities within the context of the leisure and sports industry.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the term Adapted Physical Activity (APA) and related theories.
LO2 Illustrate provision and major policy documents relating to people with disabilities in sport, fitness and leisure.
LO3 Determine and discuss the pathophysiology of a range of conditions and their implications for exercise programming.
LO4 Plan, implement and evaluate a physical activity programme for individuals with a disability.
LO5 Examine sports structures and organisations for people with disabilities in Ireland.

Philosophy of APA, Historical development and current status of APA, European perspective of APA. Adaptation and Contact Theory
Policy and provision for people with disabilities in Ireland
Service provision, National Disability Authority, Current participation levels, barriers to participation, inclusion strategies. Salamanca Statement and Framework for Action on Special Needs Education (UNESCO, 1994), The Education for Person’s with Special Educational Needs Act 2004 (EPSEN) and The Disability Act 2005
Sport and Disability
Classification and International organisations, Sporting organisations for people with disabilities in Ireland.
Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology of the following conditions: Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Cord Injury, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Dyspraxia (DCD), Epilepsy, Deaf & Hard of hearing, Blind & Visual impairment, Amputee and Depression.
Planning, Implications and guidelines for APA
Implications for exercise planning, instruction, guidelines and evaluation for physical activity programmes for persons with disabilities.
Adapted Activities
Modifications and adaptations for physical activities - circuit training, cooperative games, gym equipment usage and games (basketball, badminton, boccia, unihoc, etc).

Project - the learner will submit a project based on research within a chosen category of disability and physical activity.

Practical Instruction and participation: the learner will be observed participating in a range of practical activities. The learner will be assessed leading a group of individuals with disabilities in a practical setting.
