Module Description: This module explores experimentation with the treatment of type in order to communicate a message. Through answering set briefs, emphasis is on choosing and developing typographic treatments appropriate to the message. This can be done using techniques such as mixed media, hand-rendering and organic/digital distortion.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Investigate and challenge the communicative values of typography and layout in the design and development of a final outcome within the context of experimental typography
LO3 Execute & manage an experimental typographic project with vision, imagination and judgement.
LO4 Display the practical and technical skills required in the presentation of a final outcome as defined by set brief/briefs

Indicative Content
Research & Analysis
Contemporary typographic graphic design, analysis of the communication of experimental type or type as image and their application in graphic design
Design & Development
This module encourages students to explore, experiment and challenge typography – through creative expression to seek interesting and unconventional ways of altering type in order to extend the visual communication.
Final Artwork Presentation
Presentation of a holistic experimental typographic project as defined by set brief/briefs with consideration for presentation of project at this level. In addition, students will be encouraged to consider a final outcome holistically in the appropriate application of the appropriate typographic information such as experimental book design, experimental packaging or other as defined by set brief.

Project 1 - Project should display appropriate use of research and design methods in an exclusively typographic or lettering based solution. Process and development are a focus in the project so as to encourage a creative and innovative approach
