Module Details

Module Code: MECH6022
Title: Mechanical CAD and Design
Long Title: Mechanical CAD and Design
NFQ Level: Fundamental
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2016/17 ( September 2016 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5211 - Mechanical Engineering
Module Delivered in: 3 programme(s)
Module Description: This module is a continuation of the student's exposure to Computer Aided Design which includes the design of mechanical components and an emphasis on a major CAD project. It also introduces different approaches to modelling the design process.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Construct various mechanical/machine components, using Computer Aided Design.
LO2 Create a detailed mechanical engineering drawing to industrial standards.
LO3 Describe different elements of the design process.
LO4 Perform functional analysis of an engineering system

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed
Co-requisite Modules
No Co-requisite modules listed
Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

The student must be familiar with the fundamentals of industry standard computer aided design software and file management.

Indicative Content
Loci
Construction of Loci Mechanism problems, i.e. Crank and Piston mechanism movements, Advanced linkage movements.
Helices
The development of helices, with regard to types of screw threads and fabricated chutes etc.
Cams
The construction of cams to include various types of followers and involving different motions.
Piping
Piping draughting to show levels, fittings, pipe runs, etc.
Project
A major draughting project, involving detailed and assembled drawings of a given engineering product, using recognised standards throughout to include, geometrical tolerancing, surface finishes, limits and fits, etc.
Design Analysis
An analysis of descriptive and prescriptive design models.
Functional analysis
Examination of product function and specification.
