Module Description: This module deals with the duties, responsibilities and requirements of the Safety Health and Welfare at Work framework legislation.It will also show the student how human attitudes and behaviour affects various Safety outcomes. This module will cover the following topics
- The History and Development of Irish Safety Legislation
- The Health & Safety Management System
- Behaviour Science
- Toxicology
- Occupational Hygiene/Health
This module is delivered in accelerated mode over the first half of the semester.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the key requirements of the Safety Health and Welfare at Work framework legislation.
LO2 Describe and explain the requirements of Safety management systems in the work place.
LO3 Discuss the requirements of a company Safety Policy and Safety Statement.
LO4 Describe the main factors which need to be taken into account when dealing with Occupational Hygiene and Hazards in the work place.

Indicative Content
Health & Safety Legislation
Law sources and institutions; common law; constitutional law; statute law; European community law; the courts system. Legal operations; criminal and civil liability; remedies; enforcement; injunctions. Specific legislation; health and safety laws; building and planning/environmental laws; fire safety laws; transport laws; employment laws; insurance laws, including all relevant statutory instruments, codes of practice and safety standards. Case law, especially precedent-setting cases.
Safety Management
Work related hazards which cause accidents/disease. Evaluating the risk posed using various risk assessment methods. Controlling these hazards by removal, substitution, or isolation in a range of machinary and particular industries; machinery guards; woodworking machinery; abrasive wheels; pressure vessels; lifting machinery; construction industry; agriculture; fishing industry. Costs of controls; implementation versus level of risk and consequences.Management responsibility.
Occupational Hygiene
Exposure hazards; dusts; gases;liquids; vapours;mists;smoke; Physical; ionising radiation; noise; vibration; light;temperature; Biological; bacteria; viruses; fungi;intoxicants. Monitoring surveys to determine exposure limits for comparison with occupational exposure limits (OELs). Controls including personnal protective equipment.
