Module Description: Understanding and interpreting the Irish employee relations system and how it impacts on effective Human Resource Management practice, policies & strategies in the hospitality industry. Recognise and manage workplace conflict and resolve industrial disputes. Interpret & apply employee law. Strategic management and human resource management practice. Contemporary human resource management and employee relations issues in the hospitality industry.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explore the legal framework within which human resource management takes place by providing an overview of Irish Employee Legislation.
LO2 Recognise and understand employer and management approaches to employee relations considering both employers' and employee objectives.
LO3 Explain the alignment between human resource management and business strategy and evaluate the impact the impact, if any of human resource management practice on organisation performance.
LO4 Explain the role of the State and its institutions and actors in the industrial relations process.
LO5 Interpret contemporary employee relations and human resource management issues.

Employment Law
Explore the legal framework within which human resource management takes place by providing an overview and basic understanding of Irish employee legislation
Industrial conflict
Understand the nature and cause of industrial conflict, disputes & grievances. develop grievance & disciplinary procedures to promote a positive industrial relations climate. Understand the role of the HR manager in negotiations in dispute resolution. Understand the role of the machinery provided by the government for assisting in dispute resolution.
Strategic Human Resource Management
Understand strategic human resource management. Be able to explain how human resource management is a strategic management practice. appreciate human resource management strategies, policies, programmes, procedures & practices that are integrated into the organisations strategies, policies, programmes, procedures & practices.
Employee Relations
Employee relations in the Irish context and how this relationship impacts on organisation structures, systems, policies, philosophies, values and culture.
Current employee relations and human resource management issues
Discussion and analysis of topical employee relations and human resource management topics. Discovering the most topical and up-to-date evidence of human resource management and employee relations practice from on line data base material and on trend articles.
