Module Description: This module is intended to provide students with an understanding of the European Union business environment and the implications of EU law and policy for companies operating in Europe.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate the political and economic factors which led to the foundation of the European Union and consider the impact of EU membership on business
LO2 Analyse the key theories of integration from a business perspective
LO3 Critically analyse the legal framework which underpins the European Union and consider how this impacts on the business environment
LO4 Evaluate the composition and functions of the key European Union Institutions and examine the impact of the institutions on business in Europe
LO5 Critically analyse the decision making process and legislative procedures used by the EU institutions and consider how different legal instruments impact on the business environment

Indicative Content
The foundation and development of the European Union
An outline of the historical background, economic and political reasons which led to the establishment of the Union and the subsequent stages in its development up to the present day.
Integration - Theories and Perspectives
Theories of integration which can be utilised to explain the development of the EU. The waves of European Union integration - past, present and future. The accession process and enlargement - challenges and opportunities for business.
The legal framework of the European Union.
Understanding European integration through a review of the main Treaties, from the Treaty of Paris to the Treaty of Lisbon. Drafting a new Treaty, intergovernmental conferences and member state ratification.
The Institutions
An introduction to the institutions of the EU as a system of governance. The Parliament, Commission, The Council of Ministers, the European Council; their composition, functions, powers and relationships with each other and member states.
Law Making - the decision-making process in the EU.
Decision making in the European Union. Intergovernmental and supranational influences. Voting in the institutions. Lobbying in the European Union. Legal instruments - regulations, directives and decisions. The role of the Court of Justice and other courts.
