Module Description: Projects of all sizes are a feature of any business environment. This module is designed to introduce the student to the basic concepts of project management and allow the student apply these concepts to a business project. The module will require project based team work and use of project software.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Integrate the project management process groups and project management knowledge areas with an applicable business project
LO3 Work effectively as part of a project team adopting various roles and responsibilities as the project requires and reflect on the project team process

LO5 Design a project plan using project management software by applying standard tools and methodologies

Key Concepts of Project Management
Definition of a project, project stakeholders, role and responsibilities of the project manager, project lifecycles and phases, project critical success factors, the triple constraint of project management.
Project Selection and Project Business Case
Project selection methods and preparation of a project business case
Overview of PMI Project framework and integration management
Introduction of 9 knowledge areas and 5 process groups and integration management
Scope Management
Requirements gathering and scope definition; Scope statement and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Time & Cost Management
Define & sequence activities; Estimate Activity Resources & Durations; Develop Project Schedule Estimate Costs & determine Budget
Risk & Communication Management
Understanding of project risk and communication and how to plan effective management of both throughout the project
Remaining PMI Knowledge areas
Introduction of remaining PMI knowledge areas, Procurement, HR and quality
Use of Microsoft Project Software
Schedule tasks, assign task dependencies, assign resources and cost and calculate overall project costs.

Working in project teams each team will create and present key project documents. A different team member will be responsible for each document. This rotating structure enables students to experience both team member and team leadership roles.
