Module Description: This module will introduce students to key aspects of the Irish legal system. It will also develop the student's awareness of legal issues relevant to modern business practice.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Explain key elements of contract, tort, commercial and EU law.
LO3 Describe the range of methods of commercial dispute resolution.
LO4 Explain the legal rules applicable to different types of business structure.

Introduction to the Legal System
Sources of Irish Law. The Courts System. Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Contract Law
Formation, terms, discharge and remedies.
Torts
Principles of liability, defences, negligence, defamation, product liability, occupier's liability, vicarious liability.
Commerical Law
Consumer Protection Law - Sale of Goods and Supply of Services, Unfair Contract Terms and Unfair Commercial Practices. Agency Law. Data Protection Law.
E.U. Law
Sources (Treaties, Regulations and Directives) and Law-making Institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, Council of the European Union and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
