Module Description: This module assists students in understanding the theory behind the practice of Performance Management. In particular, the module examines the components of performance management and its relationship with turnover and retention.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Performance Appraisal
Varieties of Performance Appraisal. Problems with Appraisals. Legal & Ethical Issues.
Staff Turnover & Retention
Defining voluntary release. Turnover trends. Explaining & Reducing Turnover.
Dismissal
Legal considerations – Unfair Dismissal Acts, Industrial Relations Acts, LRC Code of Practice on Grievance and Disciplinary Procedures, what should be included in a Disciplinary Procedure, the difference between Gross Misconduct and progressive discipline, appropriate penalties and when to use them, how to conduct a disciplinary investigation/hearing, Employment Appeals Tribunal and Rights Commissioner Service – when to use them and how they operate, penalties applied for unfair or wrongful dismissal.
