Module Description: Employee Relations and Managing people in the Tourism Industry. This module explores human resource management practices in relation to reward management, performance management and motivation. It also explains the nature of employee relations practices and workplace conflict. It describes the machinery available to help businesses to resolve this conflict.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Examine the nature, characteristics, concerns and guiding principles of performance management with a view to understanding the differences between performance appraisal and performance management.
LO2 Critique the concept and elements of reward management, its strategic and detailed aims and philosophy, making reference to the economic factors that affect levels of pay.
LO3 Apply motivation theory aiming to obtain added value through people while achieving sustained high levels of performance through these people..
LO4 Examine the complex nature of the employee/employer relationship within the context of Employee relations by appreciating the traditional voluntarist nature of Irish employee relations, the pluralist and unitarist perspective, trade Union structure, collective bargaining and Employer associations.
LO5 Recognise conflict in the workplace and the role of the manager in handling and resolving conflict in addition to understanding and applying the machinery supplied by the State to resolve issues of difference.

Motivation and job design
Theories of motivation, analysis of worker performance on how work and its rewards satisfy individual employees needs. Work design and how it influences employee satisfaction and motivation.
Employee Relations
Employee Relations- the Irish context. Unitarist and pluralist perspective of Employee relations.State involvement.Trade Unions and Employer organisations. Disciplinary rules and procedures.
Workplace workplace conflict
Recognising workplace conflict. Design and application of grievance procedures to manage conflict. Dispute resolution. Using the support of the state i.e. LRC, LC, in dispute resolution
