The module aims to develop the learners knowledge of the study of management. The main functions of management provide the basis for this module. The module will be taught with specific emphasis placed on the agricultural and horticultural sector at a strategic level.

Introduction to Management
An introduction to management, the management process, levels of management, kinds of managers, basic managerial skills and roles, the classical management perspective, the behavioural management perspective, contemporary management issues.

The Management Environment
The environment and organisational effectiveness, the general and task environment for the agri/horticultural industry, the internal environment, the organisation's culture.

Strategy & Strategic Planning
Organisational goals and plans, planning and strategic management, using SWOT analysis to formulate strategy, formulating business level strategies, planning and decision making in the agri/horticultural sector.

The Organising Process
Designing jobs, departmentalisation, reporting relationships, co-ordination, forms of organisational design, emerging issues in relation to organisational design, strategy and organisational design.

Leadership & Managing Human Resources
The nature of leadership, the strategic importance of human resource management, attracting and developing human resources in the agri/horticultural sector, new challenges in the changing workplace.

The Control Process
The purpose of control, the steps in the control process, types of control, managing control systems.
